Quiz Answers

1. A wound that requires a butterfly dressing to close is first aid, not a reportable injury.

According to the Cal/OSHA Forms for Recording Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, employers and providers should NOT record an injury as a case “if it involves only: …using wound coverings, such as bandages, BandAidsTM, gauze pads, etc., or using SteriStripsTM or butterfly bandages.” (page 3)

2. An injury that requires a rigid support splint for treatment is a recordable injury, not first aid.

According to the Cal/OSHA Forms for Recording Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, employers and providers should NOT record an injury as a case “if it involves only: …using any totally non-rigid means of support, such as elastic bandages, wraps, non-rigid back belts, etc.” (page 3)

So, a rigid means of support indicates a recordable injury.

3. An eye injury that requires a hand held burr (drilling device) to remove a foreign body is a recordable injury, not first aid.

According to the Cal/OSHA Forms for Recording Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, employers and providers should NOT record an injury as a case “if it involves only: …using irrigation, tweezers, cotton swab or other simple means to remove splinters or foreign material from areas other than the eye.”

If you need a complex device like a hand held burr to remove a foreign body from an eye, then it doesn’t qualify as just first aid.

4. An injury that is treatable with over the counter label direct doses of Tylenol is first aid, not a reportable injury.

According to the Cal/OSHA Forms for Recording Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, employers and providers should NOT record an injury as a case “if it involves only: …using non-prescription medications at non-prescription strength.”

5. An injury that requires an x-ray used for diagnostic purposes to confirm no fracture and no other treatment is medically indicated is first aid, not a reportable injury.

According to the Cal/OSHA Forms for Recording Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, “diagnostic procedures, including administering prescription medications that are used solely for diagnostic purposes” are not considered medical treatments.
